  • 0-30MHz (HF) transceiver with decent performance.
  • Please follow the standard "Fork and Pull" model and introduce yourself on Google Groups. Contributions and derivatives are encouraged. All software and hardware intellectual property is open source. Initial receive and transmit tests show good performance and appear later in this README. The ported firmware preserves enough compatibility with the original Hermes SDR so that existing Hermes front-end software may be used with the Hermes-Lite without modification. The FPGA firmware is a port of the Hermes SDR project. A hardware prototype has been built and tested that uses a BeMicro SDK FPGA board for DSP processing. The hardware is based on Analog Devices' AD9866 which is a 12-bit broadband modem mixed signal front end that has been repurposed as a direct down conversion and direct up conversion SDR transceiver covering 0-36 MHz. See the main Hermes-Lite Web Page for the latest links and details. Current development is now focussed on the Hermes-Lite 2.x. I followed it with a live demonstration, using TeamViewer to connect with my iPad from the club’s meeting location to my Windows PC at home which was controlling my HF radio. This project is deprecated. Although they aren’t designed for “rag chewing,” or extended conversations, they do fill a gap for “DX chasers”–those who enjoy making brief contact with ham radio operators in other countries. JT65/JT9 are modes that shine when signals are very weak. Modes of communication that work well at low signal levels will become more prominent during the next few years as a result. Since sun spots contribute significantly to the ionization of the F1 and F2 layers of the ionosphere, worldwide propagation will wane as well. Solar activity, as measured by the presence of sun spots, is expected to drop and bottom-out in 2020.

I gave a short presentation to the Saint Clair Amateur Radio Club last week regarding two “relatively” new digital modes of communication on the High Frequency bands that have been gaining in popularity.
